Milton Keynes Liberal Democrat and Labour Groups have again signed an agreement to work in partnership on Milton Keynes Council for the year ahead, after local elections were postponed until May 2021 due to the COVID-19 pandemic.
The Milton Keynes Labour Group currently runs the Council as a minority administration with the support of the Liberal Democrat Group, with a Labour Leader of the Council and Labour Cabinet. The Liberal Democrats have 15 councillors and Labour have 23.
The two groups have worked well together over the last few years, fostering a good working relationship to deliver for the people of Milton Keynes.
Whilst in partnership the Liberal Democrats have been able to deliver some amazing successes, including the creation of the Child Poverty Commission and bringing forward a successful motion demanding equality for wheelchair and mobility scooter users.
The partnership agreement commits the Labour and Liberal Democrat Groups to work on an updated Council Plan that continues to provide the people of Milton Keynes with the stable leadership they need currently, and over the coming year, as we look to the recovery of our city.
Councillor Douglas McCall, Leader of the Liberal Democrat Group, said:“As Liberal Democrats we will continue to pursue our priorities, particularly tackling poverty and homelessness, improving our health and social care, building a stronger economy and keeping the budget balanced. This partnership means Milton Keynes will have a stable political environment over the year ahead, which is crucial to the recovery from the COVID -19 outbreak.”
Councillor Pete Marland, Labour Leader of the Council said:“We’re pleased to be able to continue our partnership with the Liberal Democrat Group at a time when the people of Milton Keynes need a consistent, stable and effective Council. We’ll be working together to continue to deliver the services our residents rely on, support the people of Milton Keynes throughout this crisis and recovery and continue to make Milton Keynes a great place to live.”
